Independent Kuşadası Guide — DIY from the Cruise Port
Port promenade to bazaar — and when Ephesus needs a coach, not a taxi gamble.
Kuşadası splits into two experiences: the port town (walkable, pleasant, secondary) and Ephesus (essential, 20 km away, needs planning). This guide covers both — walking from the ship, taxi fares, Ephesus tickets, opening times, heat, footwear, food, currency, safety and getting back before all-aboard.
Walking from ship: exit terminal, follow waterfront promenade south 15–20 minutes to the bazaar and marina. Flat, signed, safe. Taxis at terminal rank: ₺100–200 to town centre (5–10 min). Port facilities include toilets, ATMs, tourist information and excursion meeting points — no shuttle needed for town.
Ephesus independently: taxi to Selçuk ₺400–600 each way (agree price or insist on meter); minibus (dolmuş) cheaper but slower. Site tickets at gate — allow queue time. Opening roughly 08:00–18:00 summer. Walk downhill from upper gate. Heat exceeds 35°C June–August — hat, 2L water, grippy trainers. Terrace Houses need separate ticket. Return: allow 35 min drive plus 60–90 min buffer.
Cafés on waterfront charge premiums — one street inland is cheaper. Shopping: leather, carpets, spices — compare prices, haggle politely. Currency: Turkish lira from ATMs; cash for taxis and small vendors. Safety: generally safe; watch bags in bazaar crowds. Independent Ephesus works for confident travellers; organised tours remove ticket, timing and meeting-point stress — see can-you-visit-ephesus-independently.
